Repairs scheduled for rural road

COUNCIL bosses say repairs are scheduled on a stretch of road that was labelled "a disgrace" by a former Winchester city councillor.

Major John Batchelder, of Corhampton, is concerned about the road linking the village to Morestead.

The rural route, known as the C9, is about eight miles long, and most of it has a 60mph limit.

Major Batchelder said: "As a city councillor in the early 1980s, I frequently raised this matter which was again discussed at our local parish council meeting earlier this month (May).

"I have lived in Corhampton for 27 years, and during that time five people have died."

Two serious accidents have also taken place within the last three months on the C9 where it meets Longwood Road near Owslebury.

The first involved a police car on a training exercise, and the second led to a woman with pelvic injuries being airlifted to hospital in Portsmouth.

Major Batchelder added that the state of the road was "a disgrace", and called on Hampshire County Council to act.

A spokeswoman for the authority said they had already carried out some patching, and more was to follow.

The council would be carrying out surface dressing, to increase grip and repair potholes, during the summer, she said.

I doubt very much that it was the road surface that caused any of these accidents, but the nut on the end of the steering wheel. Its a country road and not a motorway, drivers should treat it as such and drive in a manner to suit the conditions!
