Historic chapel site protected

THE site of a medieval chapel in Winchester is set for more protection following a survey by archaeologists.

The place of worship, thought to date from the 12th or 13th century, was built in the Winnall Moors, north of the city centre.

The area, which nestles beside the River Itchen, is an urban haven for wildlife.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, which runs it, managed to acquire 53 further acres of land last year, on top of the 110 acres under its control.

The additional land included the old chapel, although as nothing remained of it above ground, nobody was certain where it was.

Hardly any records about the chapel existed, and apart from some excavations in 1921, no major attempt had been made to delve into its history.

The trust spoke to Winchester City Council about the lost chapel, which, in turn, recruited a team from the city's university to start digging.

Council archaeology expert, Tracy Matthews, added: "The survey results were fantastic and have confirmed the location and suggested layout of the medieval chapel, and even the possible locations of the 1921 trenches."

The trust intends to use the results to ensure the chapel's remains are not disturbed or damaged.

It is currently trying to attract extra financial backing from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help with the running of the site.
