Body found on M3 in Winchester
A BODY was found on the M3 near Winchester today (December 12).
The man was discovered shortly after 9am, at the top of the slip road at junction nine of the motorway, at Winnall.
Officers sealed off the area for a full investigation and a Home Office pathologist was called in. Police closed the road leading up to the Winnall roundabout, from the northbound M3, and the stretch of road up to the roundabout at Tesco. The area is not expected to reopen until rush hour time this evening.
Drivers on the M3 northbound who wish to access the A34 are being advised to continue northbound on the motorway to junction seven where they can turn around and access junction nine southbound.
The man is described as being in his 50s or 60s, with balding grey hair and wearing a light brown anorak and brown trousers.
Chief Insp Roy Bayntun from the roads policing unit at Whitchurch said: "It's not clear at this stage how this man's body came to be found on the carriageway and we are keeping an open mind into the causes.
"The area around the Winnall roundabout and junction nine of the M3 would have been very busy at that time of the morning and I am appealing for anyone who may have seen what happened to contact me.
"It might be that that traffic has since left the area continuing their journey on the M3 or A34.
"I am also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a man fitting the description of the deceased crossing the carriageway at this time."
Anyone with information is asked to contact the roads policing unit at Whitchurch quoting Operation Page' on 0845 045 45 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
