Rush hour misery as M3 shut

COMMUTERS faced traffic chaos this morning (Thursday) after police closed a busy stretch of motorway.

The M3 was closed in both directions at junction 13 near Eastleigh at around 5.30am.

Officers said they were called shortly after 5am by a motorist who was concerned for the safety of a man and they closed the road soon after.

They have now detained a 40-year-old man from Southampton under the Mental Health Act.

Both carriageways had reopened by 8am, but queues of more than 10 miles on the M27 have been reported.

The closure caused long queues back to the M27 and has put pressure on surrounding roads in Eastleigh and Romsey.
