Jazz legend Humphrey Lyttelton & His Band are returning to The Concorde Club, Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh on Wednesday April 9.
Much loved throughout the world, Lyttelton is a self-taught trumpet player who has led an astoundingly successful career and has established himself as one of the father figures of British Jazz.
In January this year he celebrated 60 unbroken years as a bandleader, and his witty and informative commentaries add to a stunning evening of jazz.
Humphrey Lyttelton was born on 23 May 1921, in Eton College where his father was a housemaster and where he was subsequently educated. He formed his first jazz band in 1948, after spending a year with George Webb's Dixielanders, a band that pioneered New Orleans-style jazz in Britain. The Humphrey Lyttelton Band soon became the leading traditional jazz band in Europe.
Humphrey was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at both the Post Office British Jazz Awards in April 2000 and at the first BBC Jazz Awards in 2001. He was also the recipient of the radio industry's highest honour in 1993 - the Sony Gold Award.
Today, as well as touring regularly with his band, he is Chairman of the hugely popular panel game I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue on Radio 4, which he has presented for 30 years, he also presents The Best Of Jazz on BBC Radio 2 and as a journalist, his articles appeared regularly in Punch and The Field.
He has written seven books and over 120 original compositions for his band.
Humphrey has had a long association with The Concorde Club. He first played there in the early 60s and was the headline act at the Clubs 21st birthday party.
He is also writing the forward to The Concorde Club - the First 50 Years' a book detailing the history of the Concorde club which is currently being written by author Norman Giller & Concorde Club founder & Managing Director Cole Mathieson
